Shrewsbury
Historic victory for the Old Salopian Hunt team
The Salopian runners championed over 37 other teams in the annual Alumni Race in Roehampton. It’s the first time the OSH have won the event since its inception in 1953.
The September heatwave made the conditions challenging but the quality of the team was superb. Ed Mallett (S 08-2013 & Huntsman) flew in at 2nd, quickly followed by Oscar Dickins at 4th (R11-16 &H’), then newcomer Michael Schutzer-Weissmann (PH & S 2012-17) entered the finish funnel at 19th. Charlie Ockleston (O 2014-19 & H’) was cheered in at 31st. Another first timer was Will Sawyer (Ph 2013-18) at 46th and Liv Papaioannou (EDH 2014-16 & H’) was 63rd. Passy Goddard (G 2011-16) was a very welcome addition to the team too, finishing at 93rd. Out of 224 entrants and 186 finishers from 38 teams the Shrewsbury performance was unbeatable, finishing 23 points ahead of Bishops Capetown (and also ahead of Sedbergh who were 3rd).
Michael Johnson (S 1955-60) who is an exceptional Veteran Category runner started the race after an impromptu warm up run from Putney when his car broke down. Unfortunately, he took a tumble and was looked after by Thames Hare & Hounds Club. He is now recovering well. The team was ably supported by Charlotte, Sam Western (S 2015-20 & H’) and Sean Sawyer (PH 2009-14 and Whip). In addition, Shrewsbury took 2nd place in the Ladies category and 2nd in the "Age-Graded" category. Everyone "Ran Hard & Ran Well" and also celebrated well in The Kings Head, Roehampton, afterwards.
