Lower Sixth pupils gain insightful experience on residential trip to The Shewsy
Twelve Lower Sixth students, along with two staff members, recently enjoyed a residential trip to The Shewsy, our partnered youth club in Everton.
The visit included a warm welcome from Vicki Parker, CEO of The Shewsy, and a tour of Liverpool led by Senior Youth Worker John Dumbell. The students engaged in various activities, including setting up and participating in the junior and senior clubs, and had insightful discussions with legal professionals like Richard Zacharias and Sir Mark Hedley.
The trip also featured a visit to the Law Courts, where students observed a case in progress, and a treasure hunt around Liverpool organised by the Shrewsbury Youth Council. These activities provided a mix of educational and fun experiences, enhancing the students' understanding of the legal system and the essential work that the Shewsy does in the local community.
Lower Sixth Form pupil Thomas B-B (R) said: “My time at the Shewsy was a real eye opener to the hard work that is put in to support the community up in Everton. Mixing with both junior and senior club children we got a first-hand and irreplaceable insight into their life and the life changing opportunities that are provided by the dedicated staff and volunteers there.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the company and immediate friendship of everyone, greatly recommending this trip to anyone remotely interested and keen to visit again!”
Kate, J (EDH, LVI) said: "Our trip to The Shewsy exceeded all our expectations and everyone really enjoyed it. The visit to the law courts and talks from specialists increased our understanding of the law and justice system and were very informative.
“However, the highlight of the trip was spending time with the children from The Shewsy in both the junior club and the senior club who were lots of fun. We did crafts and played football with the junior club members, and the senior club members gave us a tour of Liverpool in the form of a treasure hunt. I would recommend this trip to anyone who has the opportunity to go!"
Kouki, H (I, LVI) added: "Volunteering at The Shewsy was such a rewarding experience. I loved spending time with the kids, especially playing football and musical chairs with them. It was great to see their excitement and energy, and it really taught me a lot about patience and teamwork.
“Visiting the law courts was equally fascinating; watching an interesting manslaughter case unfold was eye-opening, and I really enjoyed discussing the legal world with Sir Mark Hedley, a High Court Judge, and family solicitor Richard Zacharias. They shared so much insight and made me even more interested in law as a profession. It was an experience I’ll always remember."
This residential trip to The Shewsy was a remarkable experience for all involved, providing both educational and personal growth opportunities. We are hugely grateful to the staff at The Shewsy for hosting us and look forward to the next visit in March.
