A Shrewsbury School pupil was the youngest competitor in a recent charity car competition in Kenya.

Sophia C (MSH, LVI) took part in the Rhino Charge - an annual 4x4 car competition held in Kenya that raises funds to support the activities of the Rhino Ark Charitable Trust. The charity works towards the conservation and protection of Kenya’s mountain range ecosystems. This year the event raised an incredible £2,000,000.

Competitors have to visit 13 checkpoints while travelling the shortest possible distance across difficult, trackless terrain. Each team consists of 4-6 people – a driver, navigator, mechanic and runners who judge the upcoming route and decide whether the car will be able to cope. Sophia was the youngest female competitor and her team, Bushbabes, won the ladies cup and came 4th in the unmodified class.

Sophia said: “The race was challenging and exciting, it was great to do something for conversation whilst having fun. I learnt a lot from it, and it was important to get out of my comfort zone and experience something new. I was very lucky to be in a team with ladies who were very kind and skilful.”
