We were delighted to host Shrewsbury’s biennial US and Canadian universities conference this week, where a large group of interested students from the region found out about the whats, whens and hows of a complex and very different educational system.

Four industry experts were able to offer their insights into where to start with an application, an update on test requirements, sports scholarships and studying in Canada.  I am most grateful to our speakers for giving up their time to join us: David Hawkins from The University Guys, Maria Blesie from UES Education, Rob Thomas from Sporting Elite USA and Tom Whittaker from the University of British Columbia.

It was particularly encouraging to hear of the importance of ‘fit’ when looking to North America, which echoes the Futures Team’s mantra of ‘the right fit for each individual’. Equally, with Shrewsbury a registered SAT and ACT centre, the return of testing as a requirement for universities was worth noting.

We are currently in the process of setting up an informal Q&A session in November for parents and students with those who have been through the process, and will be in touch soon with more details.

More than a dozen Salopians have headed over the Atlantic to start their undergraduate studies this year and with some of our current Upper Sixth already holding scholarship offers, interest in the US and Canada remains strong.  Anyone in the 5th and 6th Forms considering such an option are encouraged to get in touch!

A recording of the event can be found here.
