Full marks for Mico’s Gold CREST Award
We are delighted to announce that Mico X (EDH, LVI) has been awarded a prestigious Gold CREST Award for her Physics project.
The Gold Award is the highest level of achievement in the CREST Awards program. Requiring a minimum of 70 hours of dedicated work on a STEM-related topic, the award encourages young minds to engage in scientific research and exploration.
Mico's project delved into the fascinating realm of earthquakes, combining theoretical knowledge with practical experiments to develop innovative ideas for reducing earthquake mortality. Her extensive background research demonstrated a profound understanding of seismic events and the potential dangers they pose to human lives as well as the history and development of engineering designs.
Mico's hands-on approach included embarking on a series of experiments to test various building modifications aimed at minimising the impact of earthquakes. Through these experiments, Mico explored different concepts and approaches, allowing her to gain valuable insights and practical knowledge in the field of both theoretical and practical physics. The external assessor of Mico's project was highly impressed, awarding full marks, which is a very rare occurrence.
Mico completed this project as part of the Lower Sixth Academic Perspectives courses, which all pupils take in their chosen subjects, to add breadth and innovation to their learning and also to embed skills that might not fall into the standard A Level specifications. In the Physics Academic Perspectives course, a range of titles have been investigated from the best pizza box design, a robotic ball-boy, testing the strength of ropes and designing a safe drop system for drone deliveries.
Congratulations to Mico and to all pupils completing their projects this term.
