Sixth Form pupil earns Gold CREST Award
An Upper Sixth Form pupil has become the third Salopian to receive a Design and technology-related Gold CREST Award in 2024.
Congratulations to Harold J (S, UVI) who recently received the prestigious award for his project consisting of over 70 hours of work on comparing the different series of aluminium materials to mass-production in automotive and aeronautics.
Harold said: “I started my project for the CREST award since metallurgy is quite a niche topic for the projects in our year group and also it greatly overlaps with my future aspiration of being a materials scientist and chemist.
“The 70 hours of work is very meaningful, and I believe it is a really good way of stretching myself beyond the syllabus as the experiments are mostly out of the syllabus. I gained lots of transferrable skills and my communication has improved, as I needed to talk to different people such as my mentors and the technicians.
“Last but not least, I’m really grateful for Miss Perkins’ consistent help throughout my project and I wish I could carry out another project like this in a different area.”
The assessor of Harold’s project said: “I liked the range of experiments you conducted paired with further research. This is an excellent project and you clearly have a bright future in STEM. Congratulations on your gold award.”
