Our Girls’ Football teams have had a busy week of fixtures, with some impressive wins under their belts.

On Friday 10th February the 1st XI Girls’ Football team travelled to Cheadle Hulme for round one of the ISFA U18 Girls Shield.

The girls made a really strong start to the game with Liv M (EDH, V) scoring from outside of the box after the defender failed to clear from a corner after just 3 minutes. The girls continued to control possession for the rest of the first half despite playing against strong opposition.

There was a good chance from Jen O (MSH, LVI) with a long-range effort that just went over the bar. In the second half Rosie M (EDH, LVI) scored from close range. Jen then provided a perfect through ball that Kate W (M, UVI) managed to slot in to make it 3-0.

In the next round of the ISFA Shield the girls will face St Albans away.

On Wednesday, the girls divided and conquered for the first time fulfilling two fixtures. Girls who are travelling to South Africa for their upcoming Cricket Tour were rested, highlighting the impressive strength and depth of the squads. Both teams journeyed in the direction of Telford, one to play a friendly against Madeley Academy and the other a league fixture against Telford College of Arts and Technology.

Despite putting up a great fight, the girls lost 3-1 to Madeley Academy. Credit to Rosie M who scored a great individual goal running the length of the pitch before drilling it into the back of the net!

Another team played in the first fixture of the Shropshire FA Post 16 Colleges and Sixth Forms League. This is a new league that provides an opportunity for female students to play football inside of their school environment.

In a goal fest under the floodlights of the dome, Shrewsbury came away victors winning 11-8! Yet a win was simply a bonus as this fixture centred on the awareness of ‘Football v Homophobia’. With the aim to make the sport welcoming of people of the LGBTQ+ community, the girls were encouraged to think about the language they use when playing football, challenge anti-LGBTQ+ language and behaviour if they feel safe to do so, and report it.

We hope the girls have a restful half term and return ready to continue the momentum facing a block fixture away to Bromsgrove School on the 4th March.
