Everything you need to know about this year's Tucks and House Singing Competition
Please be aware that due to the adverse weather conditions today, we have taken the difficult decision to postpone the whole school race ‘The Tucks’ at Attingham Park. Pupils will be in school for normal timetabled lessons.
The House Singing event will go ahead as planned. For those parents attending House Singing this evening please check your journey before setting off.
Next Friday, 20th October, sees two of the most hotly anticipated events of the Salopian calendar: the Tucks and House Singing.
Shrewsbury School is credited with being the birthplace of cross-country running. The Royal Shrewsbury School Hunt is the oldest cross-country club in the world, with written records dating back to 1831. The Tucks – the annual whole-school race over a distance of 5km – is almost as old as the club itself. Since 2018, the race has taken place in the beautiful grounds of Attingham Park, a few miles outside Shrewsbury.
The race will begin at 2pm in front of the house. Parents are warmly encouraged to come along and support. As Attingham Park is a National Trust property which is open to the public, there is a charge for entry (please report to visitor reception) and we politely request parents to follow the signage regarding parking and keeping dogs on leads. After the race, we also ask parents to wait until the first wave of buses have returned to school before departing, in order to avoid traffic jams in Atcham. Please feel free to avail yourselves of the excellent tea shop while you wait!
The Tucks will be followed by House Singing. For those attending the event live in the Alington Hall, there will be a cash-only bar run by the SSPA in the foyer of the Barnes Theatre from 5.15-6.15 and 8.30-9.30pm. The event will begin at 6.30pm, and we ask that parents watching the event in the Alington Hall remain for the performances of all houses: this is one of the musical highlights of the year and the students’ performances are always spectacular!
There will be a retiring collection in aid of the Shrewsbury Foodbank and the event will close at approximately 9.30pm. For those of you not able to attend in person, the event will be live streamed here, with the ever-entertaining commentary of Mr Percival and Ms Peak. We encourage you to engage with the event on our social media platforms, using the hashtag #HouseSinging23. A recording of the evening’s performance will be available to order from Microvideo after the event.
The running order of the evening will be as follows:
- Emma Darwin Hall
- Rigg’s Hall
- Moser’s Hall
- Churchill’s Hall
- School House
- Ridgemount
- The Grove
- Ingram’s Hall
- Mary Sidney Hall
