Friday 18th October sees the return of two of the most hotly anticipated events of the Salopian calendar: the Tucks and House Singing.

Shrewsbury School is credited with being the birthplace of cross-country running. The Royal Shrewsbury School Hunt is the oldest cross-country club in the world, with written records dating back to 1831. The Tucks – the annual whole-school race over a distance of 5km – is almost as old as the club itself. Since 2018, the race has taken place in the beautiful grounds of Attingham Park, a few miles outside Shrewsbury.

The race will begin at 2pm in front of the house. Parents are warmly encouraged to come along and support. As Attingham Park is a National Trust property which is open to the public, there is a charge for entry and we politely request parents to follow the signage regarding parking and keeping dogs on leads. After the race, we also ask parents to wait until the first wave of buses have returned to school before departing, in order to avoid traffic jams in Atcham. Please feel free to avail yourselves of the excellent tea shop while you wait!

The Tucks will be followed by House Singing. For those attending the event live in the Alington Hall, there will be a Pay Bar run by the SSPA in the foyer of the Barnes Theatre from 5.15-6.15 and 8.30-9.30pm. The event will begin at 6.30pm, and we ask that parents watching the event in the Alington Hall remain for the performances of all houses: this is one of the musical highlights of the year and the students’ performances are always spectacular!

The parents of students in partsong, the Upper Sixth and Third Form will already have received details on how to book.

There will be a retiring collection in aid of the Shrewsbury Foodbank and the event will close at approximately 9.30pm. For those of you not able to attend in person, the event will be live streamed, with the ever-entertaining commentary of Mr Percival and Ms Peak. We encourage you to engage with the event on our social media platforms, using the hashtag #HouseSinging24. A recording of the evening’s performance will be available to order from Microvideo after the event.

The running order will be as follows:

  1. Queen Elizabeth Hall
  2. Severn Hill
  3. Oldham’s Hall
  4. Mary Sidney Hall
  5. Ingram’s Hall
  6. The Grove
  7. Ridgemount
  8. Churchill’s Hall
  9. Emma Darwin Hall
  10. School House
  11. Moser’s Hall
  12. Rigg’s Hall
