Second annual Salopian Charity Football Tournament raises money for two charities
On Sunday 12th November, members of Shrewsbury staff, Old Salopians and Parents and Friends of Shrewsbury School came together for the second edition of the Salopian Community Charity Football Tournament.
After the success of last year’s tournament, which raised over £6500 for Restart Africa, there were many conversations about who would claim victory.
The first game saw the Shrewsbury School Staff TS XI overcome the Parents and Friends side in a tight 2-1 victory. Unfortunately, Shrewsbury School Staff AM XI struggled to replicate their form which saw them run out winners in the 2022 edition of the tournament, and were defeated 2-0 by a strong Old Salopian XI. The 3rd/4th Play-Off was a high scoring affair, with the Parents and Friends side claiming a 4-1 victory over the Staff AM XI.
In the final, both sides had chances to win it in normal time, with Goalkeeper Piran Legg making some stunning saves for the staff side to take the game to penalties after finishing 0-0. Misses by Mr Exham, Tom Stanhope and Mr Turney meant that the Old Salopian side were crowned champions after the winning penalty from T Walters guided them to a 3-2 win on penalties.
The tournament was in aid of both Shrewsbury Foodbank PLUS and Restart Africa, and at the time of writing the total amount raised is £4379.
Thanks to the grounds team, catering team, players, supporters and pupils for all their efforts in making this a successful event.
