Shrewsbury Dialogues programme to host Professor of Psychiatry
Shrewsbury School is looking forward to welcoming Professor Femi Oyebode to school as part of the Shrewsbury Dialogues programme.
Professor Oyebode led the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Birmingham from 2003-2009, and was awarded the 2016 Royal College of Psychiatrists lifetime achievement award after decades of research on clinical psychopathology and delusional misidentification syndromes. His other specialisms include the medical humanities and the application of ethics to psychiatric practice.
Since retiring from clinical practice in 2021, he has focused on teaching, broadcast work and writing. He is on the editorial board of the British Journal of Psychiatry, the Council of the Royal Society of Medicine, and presented the 2023 BBC Radio 4 series, Is Psychiatry Working?
In his talk at Shrewsbury on Wednesday, January 24, Professor Oyebode will share insights from his career, including his views on the intersection of medicine and humanities. As a published poet and author of books such as Madness at the Theatre, Professor Oyebode will discuss his views on the humanising role of literature in medicine.
Students and guests will be invited to explore the idea that the ‘wonder of the human being is the capacity to imagine the other.’
Tickets for this event are open to the public and can be booked here.
