Sixth form students demonstrate passion for science in Hawksley-Burbury Competition
Shrewsbury School’s Hawksley-Burbury Competition 2024 took place on the 23rd April 2024.
Named after Old Salopian, Samuel Hawksley-Burbury (OS 1848-1850) it challenges students’ practical Science skills, focusing primarily on observation, deduction and clear scientific communication.
The competition is split into three parts, Biology, Chemistry and Physics and the students were challenged to identify skulls, observe chemical reactions and find the density of plasticine by utilising a variety of equipment.
The group of 23 Lower and Upper Sixth students entered into the competition with determination and enthusiasm, demonstrating a strong skill-set and genuine passion for the subjects, even in those that they were no longer studying at A Level.
Each subject had a winner, with an overall winner awarded a prize at Speech Day.
The winners were as follows:
- Biology – Daniel M (O, LVI)
- Chemistry – Kevin Z (SH, LVI)
- Physics – Michael L (SH, LVI)
- Overall winner – Michael L (SH, LVI)
Congratulations to all of those involved in this popular highlight in the academic calendar.
