Upper Sixth Music

We were delighted to welcome an appreciative audience to our final Gala Concert of this academic year, which was a fabulous showcase concert.

The concert was bookended by Film music, a genre that really is enjoyed by generations of people. For more than 80 years, music has accompanied nearly all films, and there are composers that stand out as iconic. Performances of various John Williams themes were presented by the Concert Band, Wind Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra all in an impressive manner, demonstrating the lyrical, meaningful and bold nature of Film music. Additionally there was a superb performance of Spring from the Four Seasons by Vivaldi featuring soloists a plenty from the String Department, accompanied by the String Orchestra.

Melissa R (G, UVI)

We could not end this year without celebrating the individual talents of our Upper Sixth musicians, many of whom have been hugely supportive and committed to the department throughout their Salopian journeys and whether it was during the Gala Concert or the Summer Jazz Concert on the 1st July, we wanted to thank them by providing a platform to celebrate their success.

Isobel H (MSH, UVI)

Concerto performances by three Upper Sixth musicians featured centrally in the Gala Concert; Isobel H (MSH) performed the late romantic work Ballade by Reinecke on flute, Melissa R (G) performed the lyrical 4th movement from Paule Maurice’s Tableau de Provence on Saxophone and Annie F (M) sang a beautiful, traditional Chinese song, Moon Song by Qing Yin.
