An evening of dazzling performances at this year's Music Scholars' Recital
Despite a blizzard outside, we enjoyed a warming evening of exceptional performances from some of our extremely talented Music Scholars on the Thursday before Coach weekend.
The evening began with a dazzling performance of movement I from Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto given by 4th former Lydia C (QEH) which provided an impressive start to what was going to be a thoroughly enjoyable concert of various styles and genres.
Tom E (Ch, UVI) took us to the impressionist sound world of Debussy in a beautiful account of the La cathédrale engloutie, followed by Ben O’S (R, UVI) expressive performance of movement III from Clarinet Sonata No.1 by Brahms, which was played with a superb tone and excellent musical detailing.
Ian C’s (SH, UVI) unaccompanied performance of Bach’s Prelude from Suite No.2 was both hugely enjoyable and stylistically accurate. After which, Clara M (EDH, V) worked incredibly hard to integrate some of the detailed covered in Professor Mark Wildman’s vocal masterclass the previous day, her performance of Silent Noon by Vaughan Williams was mature with admirable breath control and beautiful tonal shading.
To end the concert, Chit S (R, IV) gave a rousing performance of Chopin’s Ballade in G minor; colourful, technical and a joy to watch - the audience left asking ourselves if Chit is really just in the Fourth Form!
