Football Sport (Lent Term)

On a blue-skied Tuesday as the sun set through the trees of Top Common, the girls played in Shrewsbury’s first Girls’ House Football competition.

Emma Darwin Hall, The Grove, Mary Sidney Hall and Moser’s put forward Junior and Senior teams to compete in a 7 a-side round robin tournament. Sports captains and girls playing football this term led their teams and guided those who were trying out something new for the first time. House colours and flags along with staff and student voices were all out in force for this event.

Congratulations to the ladies of EDH who won both the Junior and Senior cups!

Less than 24 hours later Top Common was greeted with snow and sleet as temperatures plummeted overnight. As part of the ‘Let Girls Play’ initiative, Shrewsbury held an U14, U16 and Senior 7 a-side competition hosting schools and colleges from the local area. The girls, parents and staff battled the bitterly cold conditions demonstrating resilience to coach and play. Yet the weather didn’t hold us back and it was an extremely successful afternoon. We are excited at the opportunity to work closer with our local schools and aim to run more festivals like this later in the year!

I would like to thank all those involved to help us celebrate International Women’s Day and for the continued support of girls’ football this term.

Please do come and support both our Junior and Senior teams as we end the term with cup, shield and league fixtures, including an ISFA National Quarter-Final match against Nottingham High School on Wednesday.
