Shrewsbury Boys' 1st team crowned ISFA Sixes National Champions
Shrewsbury Boys’ 1st Football team were crowned Independent Schools’ FA Sixes National Champions for the first time in almost 40 years last weekend.
The ISFA Sixes tournament was hosted on site on Sunday and saw Shrewsbury take home the title - as well as being the only team to win all of their eight games in the competition.
The group stages saw us play 5 and win 5, including beating eventual finalists Ardingly 3-1 along with the Plate Final winners Brentwood 2-1. Another 2-1 victory, this time against Dulwich, set up a semi-final against old rivals Bradfield for a place in the final.
Despite having a genuine goal not given and a great chance saved by the Bradfield goalkeeper with the last kick of the game, the match ended in a penalty shoot-out. A titanic shoot out would go to the 10th penalty, with a Will J (Rt, UVI) save sending us into the final to win the shoot-out 10-9.
It was a nervy end to the game, although we largely dominated the final against Ardingly, with the winning goals coming from Louis C (I, UVI) and Isaac E (Rt, V) and a final score of 2-0, the first time Shrewsbury have been crowned champions since 1985.
Director of Football Steve Wilderspin added: “It was really pleasing to win a major piece of silverware so early in the season and it was just reward for all the hard work the squad have put into their pre-season preparations.
“They thoroughly deserve to be crowned national champions having come through 8 victories against some top-quality opponents. The work rate throughout the tournament was phenomenal with each of the 10 players involved made telling contributions to the overall success.”
