Boys' 1st XI players represent national team at ISFA U18 match
Last weekend saw Shrewsbury School host an Independent Schools’ Football Association U18 fixture, which featured two of our Boys' 1st XI players representing their national team.
1st XI Captain Oscar C (O, UVI) and striker Louis C (I, UVI) represented the ISFA U18 Representative side against Australia Schools on Sunday.
Louis, who was Captain on the day, tells us more about the match.
“Last Sunday saw ISFA’s National Under 18 team take on Australia’s Under 18 schoolboys. I had the great honour of Captaining the team for the first time, and it was even more special because the match was played here at Shrewsbury on our First Team pitch.
“The ISFA U18’s squad came together for the first time in December when we had a training camp at St George’s Park, where we played two international matches and I received my first England cap. We won one and lost one but our performances in both games were very strong, showing encouraging signs for the games ahead.
“These thoughts materialised as we managed to beat Australia 9-1, which was obviously a fantastic result. This result wasn’t down to the Australians having a poor side however, we played well as a team and there were some incredible performances on display. I felt as if I had a decent performance with one goal and three assists. A really great day not just for me but for all the players and our coaching team, which includes our own Director of Football, Mr Wilderspin.”
Steve Wilderspin, Director of Football at Shrewsbury and Assistant Manager of the ISFA U18's team, added: “It is an honour to host games of this stature and importance at the School.
“We are extremely proud of Oscar and Louis’ achievements in not only being selected for the ISFA Representative side, but also the fact they are starting 11 players for the team. Had Isaac E (R, V) not been injured, he would also have been representing the ISFA U16’s in their game against the Australia U16’s.
“It’s the pinnacle of any School sports performer to represent their national team, so for these boys to be able to do this on their home ground, it makes it even more special.”
To cap off a successful week for Salopian football the Boys' 1st XI were victorious against Lord Williams's in the ESFA National Cup last 16. Their 6-0 victory sees them go through and rewarded with an away day to Torquay in the Quarter Finals.
