Biology pupils placed in the top 5% of global competition winners
Six Salopians have been placed in the top 5% of winners of a global Biology competition that was entered by more than 43,000 students.
Third and Fourth form pupils have performed exceptionally well in this year’s Royal Society of Biology ‘Biology Challenge’, with pupils being awarded Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, and a further 50 pupils being highly commended.
The Biology Challenge is open to pupils in Third and Fourth Form and this year had more than 43,685 students from 621 schools worldwide taking part in the competition.
The entire Fourth Form and some pupils from Third Form undertook two 25-minute papers, which were set on the school curriculum, and the results this week showcased our students’ hard work with six pupils being awarded Gold; placing them in the top 5% of entrants, 11 pupils being awarded Silver; placing them in the next 10%, and a further 33 pupils being Bronze; placing them in the next 15%.
The winners of the Gold awards were:
- George R (PH, IV)
- Mia H (G, IV)
- Evans S (Ch, IV)
- Merrie J (M, IV)
- Jeremy C (R, IV)
- Richard W (Rb, IV)
Deputy Head (Academic) Dr Richard Kowenicki said: “Congratulations to all award winners, who were put through their paces with this challenge. The mixture of knowledge-based and problem-based questions is excellent preparation for taking Biology and other STEM subjects to A Level and beyond.
“I look forward to seeing our students in this year group enjoying success in Olympiad competitions in years to come.”
