On Saturday evening, five of our Music Scholars competed in the final of the Concord College Concerto Competition.

With eight students in the final the competition was tough, but all of our students performed to an incredibly high level, playing with exceptional musicianship and impressive techniques.

The students performing were:

Jia S (Rt UVI) - Poulenc Piano Concerto – 1st movement

Marina K (EDH, V) – Golovko - Russian Marimba Concerto – 1st movement

Max H (Rt UVI) – Lalo - Symphony Espagnole for Violin and Orchestra – 1st movement

Bob L (S, IV) – Weber Bassoon Concerto

Jay W (SH, UVI) – Sarasate - Zigeunerweisen for Violin and Orchestra

I would like to commend all our musicians; as Director of Music, it is a pleasure to work with such talent on a daily basis, well done to you all!

The overall winner of the competition this year was Marina, who demonstrated an exceptional understanding of the musicality and structure of this complex piece and performed with style and panache in a truly engaging and enjoyable performance. Well done Marina!

Stavros Kokkinos, Conductor and Head of Music at Concord said: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you for your accomplished and polished performances on Saturday night. I thought that your level of professionalism and music making on the night was exceptional in every single way and worthy of special praise. You did yourselves and your respective schools proud.

“A very well done of course to Marina for winning the coveted trophy and title this year with her daring and dazzling interpretation of her marimba concerto.”
