BBC Philharmonic Orchestra sub-principal joins Shrewsbury Brass Festival
We were delighted to welcome Gary Farr to school on Sunday to work with our brass department in our inaugural Brass Festival.
Gary holds the position of Sub-Principal Trumpet of the BBC Philharmonic, having previously played with the Hallé Orchestra, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Remix Ensemble in Portugal, and at major music festivals around the world, including the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. He is also a trumpet tutor at Manchester University and at the Junior Royal Northern College of Music.
The day consisted of ensemble performances, a masterclass, concert and even making some contemporary music using extended techniques. With support from our brass teachers, John Hutchinson (trumpet), Reuben Alldridge (trombone) and Chris Evans (tuba) our students enjoyed an engaging and inspiring day. Well done to all that participated, individual awards were made to the following students:
- Solo Prize (masterclass) - Oliver C (R, IV) (trumpet)
- Leadership Prize - Sophie V-S (M, UVI) (trombone)
- Musical Awareness Prize - James M (O, V) (trombone)
- Chamber Performance Prize - George R (Ph, III) (trumpet)
- Outstanding Performer - Sam H (I, LVI) (tuba)
