Shrewsbury
Gregynog Young Musician of the Year 2022

It was fantastic to be able to take three of our Music Scholars to Gregynog Hall to compete in the semi-final of this prestigious, annual competition.
After submitting a recording for the first round, Marina K (EDH, V) (marimba), Sam H (I, UVI) (euphonium) and Jay W (SH, UVI) (viola) were selected to compete in the semi-final in which there were 17 young musicians. To have been chosen to compete in the semi-final was a huge achievement in itself, each of our students competed strongly against a field of musicians from various specialist music schools and junior departments. For two of our students to make it to the final five on Saturday evening was a huge privilege and one that they should be very proud of.
‘Being a finalist for the Gregynog Young Musician is a great honor to have, this is my first time being in such a prestigious music competition. I am so delighted to meet other fabulous young musicians and I want to thank my teachers for their support and arrangements!’ – Sam, Winner of the Brass Category
‘The Gregynog Competition was a fascinating experience! Meeting musicians who play at such a high level and performing with them at the finals was truly an honour on my part.’ - Marina K, Winner of the Percussion & Harp Category.
