Two Salopians score opportunity to work with National Youth Music Theatre
The pair will work with the National Youth Music Theatre (NYMT) on their summer production of Billy the Kid.
After successfully auditioning, Jonty G (SH, U6) has been offered the seat of Reed 1 with the NYMT. Jonty will be required to play alto saxophone, clarinet and flute.
Joining Jonty is Jake L (R, L6) who has been awarded a place on the NYMT summer programme as a stage manager / lighting operator, providing technical support for the show throughout its run.
Billy the Kid is an adventure story, a magical, musical comedy set in a colourful world of cowboys and bandits, cactus trees and caballeros. The production will run in a professional West End Theatre where the pupils will be performing and producing the show at the end of August.
Maria McKenzie, Assistant Director of Music said: “This will be a fantastic opportunity for Jonty who would love a West End Musical career. We are delighted that we have been able to nurture not only his saxophone skills but develop these additional instruments during his past 5 years.”
Director of Drama, Helen Brown added: “Jake has been a stalwart of the Technical Theatre society throughout his time at Shrewsbury, assisting the Theatre Technicians with everything from painting sets to operating sound and lighting – even operating the tank turret on ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’! In recognition of his contribution to the theatre, he was awarded the Keighley Cup for Stage Management in 2019.”
Well done Jonty and Jake and good luck this summer!
