On Thursday 9th October, Shrewsbury School hosted a visit by two professors from the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) and one of their top undergraduates.

Students from Shrewsbury and local young string players took part in a masterclass - playing their pieces with piano and getting feedback from two of this country's top teachers.

Our students started the afternoon with a two-hour class covering all bowed string instruments, before the younger players had their chance.

Musical highlights included a Brahms Sonata for Viola and Piano (Jay W, SH, UVI), Cassado – Requiebros for Cello (Mia H, G, IV), Bach for Double Bass (Jensen K, SH, LVI) and some fabulous performances of classic works by local youngsters.

A Double Bass student from the RNCM treated both groups to a piece of stunning Bass music as inspiration for hard work!

Chris Hoyle (Heads of Strings) and Catherine Yates (Deputy) talked about bow holds, posture, communicating with audiences and how to make the best tone. The lessons were expertly handled and full of insight.

We hope the RNCM will return in the not-too-distant future and a great afternoon was had by all!

David Joyce

Head of Strings
