Shrewsbury School community raises more than £6,500 for Restart Africa
Shrewsbury School is delighted that a recent fundraising campaign has raised more than £6,500 for our chosen international charity, Restart Africa.
For the past few weeks the Salopian community has been donating money in order to win raffle prizes and lots from a silent auction that featured signed merchandise from Old Salopian and English cricketer Issy Wong, a framed rowing unisuit signed by the 2022 GB Gold Medal winning VIII and various vouchers and treats for local businesses.
Money was also raised at the Staff, Parents and Old Salopians Charity football match, which saw various members of the school community go head-to-head on the pitch, with a staff team coming out victorious.
A grand total of £6,700 has been raised for the charity through these fundraising events, which will support the education of children in Africa.
Adam Morris, Teacher of Spanish and Master i/c Fives organised all the fundraising campaigns and was thrilled with the amount of money raised for Restart Africa.
Mr Morris said: “I am delighted that we have been able to raise such a large amount of money for a very worthy cause. The money raised will help the educational provision for the children at Restart by employing two new members of teaching staff.
Restart Africa, our chosen international charity, has been linked strongly with Shrewsbury and Old Salopians since its creation, and its purpose of providing young people with an education harmonises with our school ethos and our drive to improve the life chances of children beyond the immediate community of Shrewsbury School.
Julia Winkley, trustee of Restart Africa, recently visited the charity to see how the money raised will be put to good use.
“The money raised will fund the education of children, as well as funding a full-time Primary teacher to support the children after school with homework and a part-time secondary school teacher who will tutor the older children in the holidays and help them to perform well in their secondary school exams. These exams are critical to them getting a place in a good college or university which of course is their ticket to freedom and a completely different life.”
Our pledge is to raise enough money to pay the annual school fees for everyday primary age Restart child – which costs £360 per year per child – so they may have the best start to their educational journey.
Thank you to all who have donated money and for your continued support for Restart Africa.
