Theo makes a big impression at U19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa
After waiting patiently to make his U19 World Cup bow, Theo W (O, UVI) made a big impression for England with both bat and ball as he took his opportunity to shine on the global stage in South Africa.
With the tournament nearing its conclusion, Theo was selected to play against one of the pre-tournament favourites Australia in their crucial Super 6 clash. With the Antipodeans cruising at 106-1, he claimed two wickets in his second over with his left-arm spin, reducing them to 109-3. He picked up two further scalps later on, including the wicket of Campbell with a gem of a delivery that turned sharply and ripped out the middle stump as Australia finished on 266-6. His figures of 4-42 from ten overs were the pick of the England bowlers by some distance.
England struggled in reply, reaching 104 all out, with Charlie Allison's 26 the highest score.
The England side then rounded off their campaign with a comprehensive 146 run win over Zimbabwe. Opening the batting for his country, Theo smashed a typically bullish 61 from just 70 deliveries. His innings included seven boundaries, as England posted an imposing 237-7 from their 50 overs. Leg spinner (and Theo's Warwickshire team mate) Tazeem Ali then dismantled the Zimbabwe reply with a stunning return of 7-29 as England won comfortably.
Theo now returns to the significantly colder climes of the UK anticipating another busy summer, where he will be representing Shrewsbury School, Warwickshire CCC, Shropshire CCC and Shifnal CC, as well as more potential international appearances against the touring India U19 team.
