Numerous Shrewsbury rowers were out racing over the Summer with some fantastic results.

Alice C (G, UVI), Natalia T (EDH, VI) and Isabelle T (MSH, OS ‘22) were history makers in becoming the first Shrewsbury girls to be selected to represent Great Britain. The Girls were selected to compete in the Junior Women’s Eight and Junior Women’s Coxed Four at the Coupe de la Jeunesse held in Spain.

The girls were joined at the event by departing RSSBC coaches Mr Grant and Mr Rudkin who were selected to coach the boys’ and girls’ eights respectively.

The event ran over two days with the crews getting two opportunities to race. The girls made the most of their chances by winning gold in the eight and silver in the four on Saturday 4th August before going one better to win gold in both the four and the eight on the Sunday.

Two of the senior boys were selected to race at the Home Countries Regatta with Daniel Grinnal (O, UVI) and George Staden (SH, OS ‘22) selected for the England and the Welsh teams respectively. Daniel coxed the England eight to victory in the sprint event having narrowly lost out to the Irish crew over the full course. George’s crew had to settle for fourth in the Junior Men’s Four before placing third in the sprint event.

Two of the J15 boys , J Datnow (PH, V) and O Connor (Rb, V), trained and competed in the double over the holiday and competed at the British Rowing Junior Championships. The boys put in a strong performance to finish 17th out of 33 crews in the J15 double.

New entrant, R Lapping (SH, IV) raced in the J14 single at the British Rowing Junior Championships coming in an impressive third place to claim bronze out of a field of 31 crews.

Departing pupils, J Walsh (SH, OS ‘22) and G Staden (S, OS’22) competed at the British Rowing Junior Championships in the J18 doubles event placing 9th of 32 crews.
