New Entrants' Concert showcases the best in upcoming musical talent

The New Entrants’ Concert is always an exciting event, showcasing the very best of our incoming musical talent.
This year’s event was no exception and proved a fitting finale to Foundation Fortnight 2023. Chit S (R) began the programme with a beautifully emotional and lyrical performance of Debussy’s ‘Reverie’. He was followed on the piano by fellow Riggite Sebastian E-M, who also provided superb accompaniment to the whole year rendition of ‘Let it Be’ at the end of the evening.
There were beautiful and varied vocal performances from Grace G (M), Harrison R (Ch), Georgie P (G) and Frances C (QEH) who treated us to songs from the musical theatre, folk, pop and classical repertoire. The wind section was ably represented by Ben F (R) on saxophone and Hazel C on clarinet, who gave a virtuoso performance of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto in A Major.
Last year, we bid farewell to a number of our most accomplished string players, so it was particularly exciting to see the new generation of violinists and viola players: Sherwyn S (SH) impressed with his performance of Cassado’s ‘Serenade’ whilst Apple S (M) gave a pure and understated performance of ‘Lullaby’ by Rebecca Clarke.
The finale of the evening was a truly spectacular rendition of Kreisler’s fiendishly complex ‘Danse Espagnole’ by Lydia C (QEH) who joins us from Chetham’s School of Music. The future of the music department looks bright with such a talented and committed group of scholars.
Of course, music at Shrewsbury is for everyone, and the evening culminated with the whole year group performing a Beatles’ classic, to the accompaniment of a Third Form band – an appropriate warm-up for House Singing, when the whole school will take to the stage in a few weeks’ time.
