Theo gets the call up for England U19 Cricket squad tour
An Upper Sixth Form student has been included in the England U19 cricket squad ahead of their tour to India.
Theo W (O, UVI) will be travelling to India in November alongside the squad for the Quadrangular Youth ODI Series after the lineup was announced on Thursday.
Theo’s inclusion in the squad follows a successful summer for the teenager where he made his England U19 debut against Australia following an impressive stint scoring 150 and 111 for the England Young Lions side.
His debut at Beckenham against the Australian U19 side saw him return figures of 4-36, finishing as the pick of the England bowlers. In his third one-day international, he blasted a 27 ball 54, finishing as the top scorer as England beat their Australian counterparts by 4 wickets.
To complete a memorable summer, Theo also put pen to paper on a rookie contract with Warwickshire CCC for their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign.
Of his inclusion, Theo said: “It is an honour to have been selected for my country for the U19 tour of India. I’m buzzing about the opportunity and I’m looking forward to the new challenges, tough opposition and hot temperatures.
“I’m really looking forward to representing my country as it’s been a lifelong aspiration of mine and hopefully the team can win a few games before the upcoming world cup.”
Director of Cricket Will Hughes said: “As Director of Cricket, it gives me a great sense of pride to see Shrewsbury School cricketers selected to represent their country.
“Theo has been with working with Shrewsbury School coaches from the age of eight, and since joining us full time in the Third Form, has made full use of our outstanding facilities on a daily basis. We speak regularly with Warwickshire and their staff to ensure Theo's programme is fully aligned, and his progression into the England set-up is a fine endorsement of the way in which we work within the professional pathway.”
Cricket Professional at Shrewsbury, Adam Shantry, added: “Theo's selection for the tour to India is a fitting reward not just for his stellar performances this summer, but for the way in which he has developed and evolved over the last few years. His dedication, tenacity and ability to overcome setbacks has been inspiring, and he richly deserves the rewards that are coming his way.
“Since joining Shrewsbury as a thirteen-year-old, we have been delighted to watch his journey from the Staffordshire age groups all the way through to signing a contract with Warwickshire CCC. After making his England U19 debut in September, he has earnt the opportunity to represent his country on foreign shores, and to benefit from all the experiences that overseas touring brings.
“Everyone at Shrewsbury is delighted for him, and we wish him every success during his time with the national side.”
